bitchat

Decentralised peer-to-peer messaging over Bluetooth mesh and Nostr. No accounts, no phone numbers, no servers, works offline.

Why it exists

bitchat is a decentralised peer-to-peer messaging app with a dual transport design: local Bluetooth mesh networks for offline communication, and the internet-based Nostr protocol for global reach. There are no accounts, no phone numbers and no central servers. Private messages are end-to-end encrypted, with automatic multi-hop relay over Bluetooth LE and a familiar IRC-style command set. It was vibe-coded over a weekend by Jack Dorsey using Block's Goose agent.

The pitch highlights offline Bluetooth mesh plus Nostr as a fallback, which raises a practical design question: how does the interface signal which transport a message actually went through, and what happens visually when a peer drops out of Bluetooth range mid-conversation? Clarifying that handoff in the UI would help users trust message delivery without accounts or servers backing it up.
